Shaffer’s Battery and Ignition is having a Brigadoon moment up on Hollywood Boulevard. A ghost sign for the long-gone auto parts maker emerged after a long slumber recently when the neighboring building at Hollywood and Western was demolished. The 99-year-old structure most recently housed Dapper Cadaver prop rentals, but in the 1920’s it was home to Shaffer’s Exide battery shop. The white plaster was applied over pegs drilled into the brick and is flaking off to reveal the sign. Photographer Larry Underhill dropped by with his images of the sign and Editor-In-Chief Mary Melton and I pieced together the bits to figure out what once was. Shaffer’s relocated to a new shop near Sunset and Vine in the early 1930s, and this freshly exhumed - and already tagged - sign will probably disappear soon when the rest of the site is leveled.
