Ghost Sign Emerges On Hollywood Boulevard

Shaffer’s Battery and Ignition is having a Brigadoon moment up on Hollywood Boulevard. A ghost sign for the long-gone auto parts maker emerged after a long slumber recently when the neighboring building at Hollywood and Western was demolished. The 99-year-old structure most recently housed Dapper Cadaver prop rentals, but in the 1920’s it was home to Shaffer’s Exide battery shop. The white plaster was applied over pegs drilled into the brick and is flaking off to reveal the sign. Photographer Larry Underhill dropped by with his images of the sign and Editor-In-Chief Mary Melton and I pieced together the bits to figure out what once was. Shaffer’s relocated to a new shop near Sunset and Vine in the early 1930s, and this freshly exhumed - and already tagged - sign will probably disappear soon when the rest of the site is leveled.

Demo sucks. No history, lost value. What, a century old building with a past wouldn't bring some attention and opportunity?

I'm not wanting to doubt your research, and more of the plaster may have now been pulled away to reveal the spelling, but are you sure that this is an ad for "Shaffer's"? While there was a Herbert J Shaffer who dealt in batteries and car repair down in South LA in this period--perhaps he manufactured batteries--better known was SHAEFER's Battery and Ignition. George H Shaefer had a shop at 6390 Sunset in the '20s, later moving to a small Moorish building at 6550 Sunset, which still stands though altered.
