For decades, all of L.A. was united under the 213 area code. The iconic digits were easy to dial on rotary phones, and the coveted low numbers (New York’s 212 and Chicago’s 312) were reserved for big cities. I let my fingers do the walking through my collection of old L.A. phone books and found these awesome Yellow Pages ads from vintage L.A. companies still thriving in 2013.
Lee Strasberg himself was still running his method-acting institute when this ad appeared in the L.A. Yellow Pages in 1980. The acting coach ran the Actors Studio in New York and trained Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Montgomery Clift. Perhaps the most famous of the “method” actors was Marlon Brando, who once said he dropped by on “Saturday mornings because Elia Kazan was teaching, and there were usually a lot of good-looking girls.” Attractive show people still frequent the Institute on Santa Monica Boulevard.
