A peek into my crazy huge collection of L.A. matchbooks: Glendale Federal Savings
Architect W.A. Sarmiento was born in Peru and had kind of an internship with the great Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyer before coming to L.A. and building a series of amazing bank buildings in the 1950s. The largest was the headquarters for Glendale Federal Savings on Brand at the heart of downtown Glendale. I love how it’s sort of off-kilter and the whole thing is balanced on that concrete see-saw. There’s even a rooftop garden for the bank executives! The bank closed around 2000 and the building is now owned by “Hollywood Production Center,” who rents it to production companies for temporary office space. Sarmiento is a very spry 90 years old and lives in Santa Monica.
