Warning Of The Week From The Queen Of Estate Sales
Los Angeles magazine writer Dave Gardetta profiled estate sale maven Cynthia Abernethy in our pages in 2010. I'm a big fan of her sales and attend regularly. She's got the best houses, she's always cordial and extremely fair to her regular customers. However, if you break her rules, the hammer comes down. This weeks' choice quote from Cynthia’s email dispatch: ” You got to love these arrogant guys who drive by, see the sign, stop in and think that they are going to get one over on me. A member of my team alerted me to him and his style, which is not going to be serving him well. "How much for all of this jewelry?" It does not work like that, she politely tells him. "Well then how about all of the postcards?" No we don't do that either. So once she nodded in his direction, he was on my radar. He's got his magnifier out thinking he's going to find some gold I missed. By now he's starting to get on our nerves and I'm thinking I had not had eject anyone yet. I personally sort and look at every piece of jewelry, so I know what is there. I make small grab bags of broken parts for people who like to create their own stuff, I never put an intact piece in those bags. Finally he brings his little $5.00 bag of parts up to pay...but another sharp eyed staff member notices a pin he snuck into the bag with the broken pieces. He can not understand why I am throwing him out and not letting him buy his bag of goodies. Good riddance! One of those guys forever looking for a $10.00 Rolex."
