It's A Flintstones Christmas

I dropped by the Little Landers Historical Society at Bolton Hall this weekend and caught a performance by the Randy Van Horne Singers. The 15-piece choir has been around in some form since the 1950s and is most famous for the string of cartoon theme songs they recorded for Hanna-Barbera. Their jingles for The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Top Cat and Huckleberry Hound play on a permanent loop in my TV-melted mind and I had to go see them live. Here They Are Performing The Flintstones This Weekend. The group’s other golden moment was doing the cooing “zoo zoo zoo” backups on the space age pop albums of Juan Garcia Esquivel, which sealed the deal for me. It was exciting to see the band perform live, even though most (maybe all?) of the original members were gone. Thurl Ravenscroft, the voice of Tony the Tiger and an icon of Disneyland, was the original bass singer! Alan Wilson took over the group when Van Horne died in 2007.  Brassy lead Franny McCartney is a local gal involved with the museum and acts as a second bandleader, bantering with Wilson the whole time. The former Bette Midler “Harlette” brings more of a shaggy seventies pedigree to the sleek midcentury singers, but they still belt ‘em out and keep the energy atomic-powered. Their version of It Happened In Sun Valley is on iTunes and is perfect for winter drive sing-alongs and manic smile-bobbing.
