When did Johnie’s, that diner at Fairfax and Wilshire, go out of business? Is it ever going to reopen?

I hope so—I was a fan of those Hawaiian banana burgers. The 57-year-old coffee shop with the electrified butterfly roof stopped serving in 2000, when the family that owns the 99 Cents Only chain bought it to use as a parking lot and film location. L.A. Metro, which has identified Johnie’s as a historic resource, is considering making it part of the Westside subway extension. My heart pounds at the thought of emerging from a station into a restored Johnie’s.
