I miss the mural on the 101 between Broadway and Spring Street with the marble statues floating in space. In its place they put up a smaller version. What’s up with the substitution? - CityThink - Los Angeles magazine

That stretch of the Hollywood Freeway was probably the first art gallery I ever visited. John Wehrle’s Galileo, Jupiter, Apollo was 207 feet long when it was commissioned for the 1984 Olympics. By July 2010, vandals had obliterated the original, and Caltrans replaced it with a 75-foot vinyl replica that lasted 116 days before it became unrecognizable. The Mural Conservancy is working to see whether the original held up under all the spray paint.
