Museum of California Design Honors Peter Shire

The Museum of California Design has been around for over a decade, curating exhibitions and programs at the Autry, Pacific Design Center and the Craft and Folk Art Museum. The book that went along with the director Bill Stern’s 2001 show California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism, became the seminal work on these ceramics and their creators. The museum hosts an annual award benefit and auction which is coming up next weekend honoring artist Peter Shire. Shire is a longtime designer and craftsman of pottery and furniture in Echo Park. He was the only American accepted into the Memphis design collaborative in the 1980s. The event always draws a colorful crowd of top designers; I was so excited to meet him that I nearly spilled my drink on Vidal Sassoon’s elegant slippers the last time I attended. Go support the museum, meet the artist, see one of Franklin Israel’s last houses and soak up the Malibu sunshine.
