A Walker in L.A.: Toffee Talk
Seeing the city from the ground up
I have a rule while walking around L.A.: If something smells good enough to stop me in my tracks, I take the time to investigate and often times eat it. Stepping off the Expo Line the other day, I became disoriented by a particular scent, a familiar sugary memory that washed over me. Was I imagining it? No, I was sure of it: the entire block was heavy with butterscotch. I hadn’t planned to walk in the direction of the smell, but with the caramel tractor beam reeling me in, I felt powerless. Soon, the distinctive black-and-white branding of See’s Candies came into view, just a chocolate turtle’s throw from the station. I sniffed the candy company’s La Cienega factory long before I saw it. I admired the vintage signage, the crisp mid-century architecture. And who knew they also had such lovely drought-tolerant landscaping? I snapped a shot, and then, remembering my rule, went inside to buy a box of peanut brittle.
