A Walker in L.A.: Signs of Love
Seeing the city from the ground up
There’s something I see often on the streets of L.A. that usually stops me in my tracks: witty, civilian-made changes to the existing infrastructural landscape. Okay, it’s vandalism. And it costs the city money to replace. But it’s the very best kind of vandalism! Part of the fun about these works of art, if I might call them that, is watching to see how long they remain intact. On a quiet street in Silver Lake, where I found this edited street sign, it’s unlikely that anyone is going to report this to the Department of Transportation. I hope it stays forever. To me, this sign now reads like a kind of love letter to the street. Caution! Love may be just around the bend.
