2/13 month: Yellow Pages Ads From The (213) Years

For decades, all of L.A. was united under the 213 area code. The iconic digits were easy to dial on rotary phones, and the coveted low numbers (New York’s 212 and Chicago’s 312) were reserved for big cities. I let my fingers do the walking through my collection of old L.A. phone books and found these awesome Yellow Pages ads from vintage L.A. companies still thriving in 2013.

From Golf n’ Stuff to Groman Mortuary, the Yellow Pages packed a lot into that flimsy newsprint. Let’s say goodbye to February (AKA 2/13 Month) with these little pieces of Old L.A. that are still open for business. Go have a pastrami sandwich at Johnnie’s in Culver City, grab a bottle of wine at the Duck Blind and a chicken basket from the Brentwood Country Mart. Sometimes I’ll drive by Valley Cleaners just to admire the font and the soft neon glow. Honest! Go spend your money at these mom and pop shops before they go the way of Bahooka.
