Ask Chris’s Tour Guide Book Binge: Southern California Out And About

On the heels of Southern California Eats, their series of colorful guides to L.A.’s vintage diners, drive-in’s and chives, John Eng and Adriene Biondo take us on a bright-eyed road trip to rediscover landmarks all over the golden state with Southern California Out And About. Like some lost Sunset magazine guidebook from the past, the couple exposes all the amazing California wonders we take for granted. The rolling sand dunes of Death Valley, the intergalactic landscape of Mono Lake, and the Giant Sequoias all get equal billing. Adding to the time-travel mystique are the strange juxtapositions of long-gone attractions like Movieland Wax Museum with newly restored buildings like the Salton Sea Yacht Club. The scenic vistas are mixed with glowing neon, portraits of small-town heroes and even a tiny Siamese lamb in a ghost town museum near Bishop. I heartily endorse this most eclectic tour of our most eclectic state.

Southern California: Out & About, is another beautiful publication from authors John Eng & Adriene Biondo. I loved all the people and places, the past, present and the future as portrayed through the photographs, captions and anecdotes of the authors. Thanks to this book I just want to find and see more of California, the quirky, the classic, both on and off the tourist track. It’s good that in the digital age I can still enjoy an armchair journey with a quality real book. Another Chris (from Australia)
