Blame Spartacus for the sign’s downfall. When Kirk Douglas endowed a multimillion-dollar gift for a new stage in 2002, Center Theatre Group bought the 1947 moderne structure and named the performance venue after him. The iconic letters have been stored in bubble wrap ever since. City planners hope to mount the vintage script atop a new building at Culver and Washington boulevards in 2016.
