Ask Chris: All Abode!
Meet the folks who made their home inside a train
Q: I heard there’s a house in the Valley made out of several old streetcars. Is this true?
A: You’re on the right track. During the Great Depression, unemployed fireman Louis A. Smith and his wife, Cleonae, left their home in Silver Lake and purchased five scrapped streetcars from Pacific Electric. The couple converted them into non-mobile residences on a patch of land in La Tuna Canyon. The Smiths passed away in the 1980s, but three of the preserved Pullmans can be found on the Streetcar Smith Trailhead off Del Arroyo Avenue.
