Got a burning question about life in LA? Ask Chris
Where do all the bears go after they’re fished out of trees in the foothill communities?
Back in the 1960s, when Yogi Bear was on TV, a real-life Mr. Ranger would sedate the carnivores, hobble and blindfold them, and drive them for an hour back into the woods. Problem was, they would get lost and die of starvation. So today the black bears (which can be 8 feet tall and weigh 800 pounds) are released closer to home, sometimes at the first available fire road. The state Department of Fish and Game rarely opts for capital punishment and makes its decisions on a bear-by-bear basis. It strongly recommends bear-resistant trash cans to make our garbage less alluring. BearSaver in Ontario makes the containers (they start at $285 at grainger.com) along with some cool videos that show how well they withstand attack. Check out the bouncing bear.
