If you’re gonna have a nice grown up dinner with your parents and look like an adult in their eyes, it’s perfect. You can have a conversation and the lighting is very nice and the food is simple and really good. We put them up at the Magic Castle Hotel and got four passes. We had dinner and drinks and saw close up magic and a big show in their main theater. It’s always good for spotting a celebrity or three. It’s a very low-key place that famous people frequent. It has an East coast sensibility and a chef from New Orleans. It’s not a dive, but it’s a very comfortable place to bring out-of-towners. The special seats and the service and people are always impressive. It feels right for the movie capital to have this wonderful movie theater. They have a desert area and a Japanese garden with bamboo that blew everyone away. We had dim sum and tea in the Chinese garden. I tried the formal afternoon tea with my mom but it was totally not worth the money. That odd combination is always interesting to people. Tompkins show at Largo and since the family are all big fans of Paul, it’s always a hit. Sometimes we go to the Roger Room next door. It’s a tiny bar that makes artisinal drinks. It’s got a red velvety art deco-y feeling and you go there and splurge on a $14 drink, then get 2 hours of comedy and awesome music. You can get some exercise, you get an amazing view at the top, and the Observatory is the symbol of Los Angeles. If you go after noon you can eat at their cafe. Mom thought the hike was challenging because it’s uphill for thirty minutes, but we make her work. I think the experience of visiting the Getty is about the architecture and the views more than the exhibits. We had wine and looked at the gardens. We sat at the counter by the grill. He thought it was very cool and Old Hollywood. The layout and the gardens and the pool and the quality of service there—it’s friendly, it’s warm. It feels like you’re going home. We actually lived there for a while years ago when we were in between houses. We were there for about two months and I loved it. It’s old LA. It’s quiet for business meetings in the morning and the food is great. If you want to be a little bit more casual, you can head down by the pool. Again, it’s the setting. It’s unique. You’re in a very urban area but you don’t feel like you are. The group that owns it has a great sense of service and comfort. And it’s not arrogance, I hate that. I hit all the restaurants. That’s one of my favorite places to go because the view is great. You’re looking over three acres of lawn and a fountain and trees. It’s a magical setting. Where else in L.A. do you get that? I was there last night with two executives out of New York and they loved the food and the wine list. My favorite wine is there. It’s called Poetry, and it’s a great California cabernet and very limited, and I found out it from going to Cut. As I was telling my son last night when I got home, you can do business there and it feels like you’re alive. I like being in places with a sense of positive energy. How good does a restaurant have to be to be in the basement and always be packed? Don’t you love that place? I go there a lot. It’s especially good for either celebrating that you got a deal done or for creating a relationship on the front end of a deal. One year I went back and he had added characters I animated in <i>Finding Nemo</i>. Tell them the story of the 1986 fire, which was the worst fire in LA history at that time.  It destroyed 20% of the books, about 400,000, and took more than 350 firefighters 7 ½  hours to overcome.  When Arco led the effort to rebuild and replace the library they sent their employees to help.  Thousands of citizens showed up to page through every book left, brushing, dusting, and assessing.  Books that were soaked with the water that doused the fire had been frozen, so volunteers leafed through each page, meticulously vacuuming out the slivered ice, then softly drying them. The books were restored and a glorious new wing was added to this early 20<sup>th</sup> C. masterpiece. The chef makes great <i>jidori </i>chicken cooked on skewers in different ways on a charcoal grill. His attention to detail is magnificence and besides the yakitori he makes great grilled duck breast and wonderful duck and porcini truffle raviolis and a special, special, special heart, for those who are brave enough—I’m not. He also makes the best <i>shabu shabu</i> in the city. It is good for a group because it’s casual and fun.
